A fortnight ago, we had Rajkumar Santhosi planting needles in people's heart by describing the pathos of cops in KHAKEE. Mehul Kumar steps in with a hard-hitting subject in JAAGO. The movie addresses child rape that has been dealt in very few cases in Bollywood. Mehul has always instilled public-provoking thoughts in his film and history speaks of Nana Patekar's lifting career, after KRANTIVEER and TIRANGA. JAAGO is a must view movie. Shruthi (Hansika Motwani) travels with her mother, Sharaddha (Raveena Tandon) everyday to school. They have to travel from Borivali to Bandra by local train. On one such evil-fated day, Shruthi is late in catching the train to her home and some young guys who are drug addicts in nature, rape her in front of the terrified co-passengers. The bereaved parents address the issue to the police. Sanjay Kapur plays the father to the kid. Kripa Shankar Thakur (Manoj Bajpai) takes the case and promises to nab the guys. But he has lot of ordeal at stake. One of the accused happens to be a politician's (Akhilendra Mishra) son. Kripa is subjected to physical tension, but he fights them back. He also lets out many secrets of the society. So what are the secrets he reveals? Will Sharaddha take revenge for her kid's death? JAAGO has a thunderous climax ahead. JAAGO is a songless film; keeping that point in mind Mehul would have few butterflies in his stomach. However, he would be happy with the performance of his starcast especially Manoj and Raveena. Coincidentally Nana Patekar and Dimple Kapadia were responsible for the hit KRANTIVEER, and could be said of Manoj and Raveena. Manoj delivers a power packed performance and has silenced his critics, who are thinking of his retirement phase. Manoj calm and composed yet the eyes does have the radiance of Bhiku Mathre. Raveena Tandon is seen in a dignified role and gives an amazing performance. It is surprising with a good script and a good director Raveena can still deliver. Her past record with SHOOL, SATTA and now JAAGO definitely holds her in reverence. Puru Rajkumar is good in his role and keeps some defining moments in the movie. Akhilendra Mishra is superb in his dialogue delivery. Hansika Motwani should be applauded for enacting such a difficult character with so much ease. Sanjay Kapoor does a saving grace to his drowning career. The rest are average. Dialogues (KK Singh) have a huge striking factor in JAAGO. They spark magic in the film during the confrontation of Manoj and Akhilendra. The court scene is also a highlighting part of the movie. However, the movie would be a bag of confusion if it were to run in the rural parts. Also the length of the movie should be curtailed. JAAGO has a great opening and looks like this subject-oriented movie is all set to rock. JAAGO has the potential to do quite a good business. |
