Lakshman, who looks like an ordinary worker, saves a poor girl (Radha) from being molested, the girl's mother, before dying, prevails upon Lakshman to be her daughter's guardian. Lakshman and his friend Chakram are engaged in investigating the murder of a girl called Mala. Disguised as Arabs, they contact Mala's sister but before she could utter a word, she is murdered by a bald man at the instance of his chief (Sagar). Laksman, who is know as Ram at Ratan Mahal, is the owner of the huge estate. He has a 6 year old daughter (Rani) and his wife (Lalitha), who is mentally deranged, is under treatment at a nursing home. Chakram succeeds in locating the bald man. He and Lakshman, disguised as Marwari businessmen, meet him. Present there in Nirmala, another sister of the murdered Mala who escapes before being questoned. Cornered by Lakshman, the bald man kills himself frustrating the attempt of the duo to get at the truth. A boy is born to Radha. Lakshman is happy. At about this time Lalitha is cured of her malady and Ram brings her home. The day is Rani's birthday and she wants Ram to be with her. At Ratan Mahal, Radha is surprised to find that Lakshman is none other than Ram and feels humiliated. Cornered both by Lalitha and Radha, Ram recollects the docter's words that Lalitha should not be given any shocking news. He, therefore, tells a lie that he has nothing to do with Radha, that he has never met her. Heart broken, Radha returns, buries the child and departs leaving a note for Lakshman about her decision to end her life Ram hurries after Radha but too late. Overwhelmed with grief, he returns to Ratan Mahal to celebrate Rani's birthday. In the meantime, Chakram, who has been on the trial of Nirmala, learns that she is trying to trap a rich jeweller (Biharilal). He informs Ram, who along with Lalitha, leaves for Bombay. But Sagar kills Biharilal and usurps the jewellery. He instructs his henchmen to kill Ram and Nirmala. Chakram's conversation with Ram over the telephone about Nirmala is misunderstood by Lalitha and she swoons. The doctor who come to treat her brings a nurse, who is none other than Radha, whom he had saved from her bid to kill herself. Ram implores Radha. Tells her he is an honest man, that Lalita is not his wife but Radha is not taken in and calls him a seasoned liar. Meanwhile, Sagar kidnaps Lalitha and Rani and demands as ransom Nirmala's person plus Rs.50 lakhs. Ram accosts Sagar and subdues him. Police take sagar into custody. But did Sagar's arrest lead to the solution of the mystery surrounding Mala's murder? What interest had Lakshman or Ram in appending/her murderer? Are Ram and Lakshman two persons or one? And how are Radha and Lalitha reconciled? For answer to these vital questions you will have to see HUMSHAKAL. |
