A refreshing comedy of errors, ‘Phas Gaye Re Obama’ may not boast of big Bollywood stars, but it tickles your funny bone and is a total ‘paisa vasool’ movie. The plot fuses spontaneity, fun, exaggeration and emotion almost perfectly to deliver a complete entertainer. Hats off to writer-director Subhash Kapoor for making a genuinely humorous film, a rarity considering the over-the-top, unfunny so-called slapstick Bollywood comedies that we have suffered this year. Om Shastri (an impressive Rajat Kapoor) is an NRI who is neck-deep in loans following the US recession and visits his home town in UP to sell of ancestral property and raise cash. Here, he is kidnapped by local thugs, who are themselves struggling to make ends meet. From here on, Shastri has a roller coaster ride, thanks to Bhaisaab (an excellent Sanjay Mishra) the gang leader, America-obsessed gangster Anni (a fantastic Manu Rishi) and Munni (a willowy yet convincing Neha Dhupia). The power-play between the gangs and Shatri’s precarious position makes for a hilarious 2.5 hours. |
